Any tips for using a pendulum?

I've always wanted a pendulum, and yesterday I went to the county fair and found a tent in the midway that had pendulums at a reasonable price, so I picked up this wonderful amethyst pendulum. (pics forthcoming- it's gorrrrrgeous!)

Does anyone have any tips for using it? Some advice?
