Order of elements

  • What is the reason behind the common ordering of elements as wands, cups, swords, pentacles?

It seems to me that a `density' ordering has some value: pentacles (earth), cups (water), wands (fire), swords (air). Any comments?

That ordering seems to resonate with a commonly held valuing of these elements. Earth is lowly and uninteresting. Air is a rarefied, more subtle vibration' corresponding tohigher' (and therefore more valued) energy. Yet the cards indicate the opposite. Pentacles and cups are the most rewarding (as you move through the numbers), while both wands and swords come to a sticky end. Is this a case of the poor/meek shall inherit' and/orpride comes before a fall'?
