With the Sun in watery Cancer, and summer on our minds, this month's Cosmic Craft Challenge, sponsored by Craftster.org, is all about the beach!.
+++++++++++++++++++++THE CHALLENGE: +++++++++++++++++++++
Get creative with materials from the Crab’s home: sand, shells, pebbles, agates, feathers, starfish, sand dollars, and driftwood are all great crafting materials for a fun summer project. Buy them from a craft store or, better yet, collect your own! Crabs are homebodies, so use these beachy materials to create something cozy for your home – wall decorations, and blankets are just examples.

This is a painting made of beeswax, resin, tar paper, pigments, and shellac. It is 10 inches by 10 inches. And smells great!
Starting with a piece of wood panel, I apply a heated mixture of beeswax, damar resin, and colored pigments. I keep this mixture on a hot-plate type of surface so it stays liquid. I have used mostly titanium white pigment here but there are some under layers that are a blue gray color as well. With a paintbrush I apply the hot liquid wax in layers and fuse it together with a butane torch so it becomes a solid surface of beeswax. After sufficient layering, I cut out thin strips of the tar paper (used for roofing and bought at the hardware store) and arrange them on the painting. I layer the tar strip arrangement with some fairly transparent, non-pigmented wax and fuse again with the torch. Finally, I apply a small amount of shellac (a mild orange/tan color) and let it dry for a while. Then, taking the painting outdoors, and wearing a respirator, I torch the shellac to get it to melt and do strange things.
I've named it "Styx."
*(I am a Cancer Sun, with Leo rising and a Pisces Moon).
